We finally have a start date confirmed for the Night Tube
The long-awaited start date for London’s Night Tube has finally been announced.
Thousands of Londoners will be able to travel around the capital throughout the night from August 19 onwards.
The long-awaited 24-hour service will begin on the Central and Victoria lines, with the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Northern following in the autumn.
The weekend service means commutes will finally be able to travel all night on Friday and Saturdays, for the first time in the Underground’s history.
Apart from the fact that it’ll save us a LOT of money on Ubers and black cabs, TFL says the Night Tube will reduce journeys by an average of 20 minutes to even an hour.
Six trains will be running every hour on all Night Tube lines between 12.30am and 5.30am.
This will increase to eight trains every hour on the Northern line to keep up with demand at busy stations between Leicester Square and Camden Town.
New Mayor Sadiq Khan called the Night Tube ‘absolutely vital’ as he announced the start date.
How excited are you about the Night Tube?
- I literally can't wait!
- Couldn't care less
He told the Evening Standard: ‘I have made getting the Night Tube up and running a priority, and London Underground has now confirmed that services on the first two lines will launch on 19 August.
‘The Night Tube is absolutely vital to my plans to support and grow London’s night time economy – creating more jobs and opportunities for all Londoners.
‘The constant delays under the previous Mayor let Londoners down badly.’
London will now join several other cities, such as New York and Berlin, which offer train services throughout the night.
Plans for the Night Tube were originally announced in September 2014, with a start date of September 2015, but due to rows over pay and working conditions, it was delayed.
